The Blunt Edge Michelangelo Award winner for best 3D art

The Blunt Edge of Portraiture is an annual exhibition held in Cairns. The concept is to get a group of artist to do portrait of another artist in the exhibition. In its 4th year it is getting bigger (some 80 artists in 2010) with the standards reaching new heights. This is the first year I have been invited to participate in the exhibition. As luck would have it I was assigned Jane Heraghty as my subject. I was thankful for this as I have known Jane for about 4 years and she is not only an interesting person but an interesting character.

I decided to depict Jane in the style of a match box. To get this result I had to learn how to do a “Lino Cut print”. After some trial and error I eventually came up with the finished print. From there I made my own version of an enlarged matchbox complete with wet and dry sandpaper down the sides.  I found some dolls heads which happened to have curly hair so I dyed the red and put them on sticks to represent the matches.

Overall it was a successful exhibition, the art piece received the Michelangelo award and was chosen to be involve in a further exhibition of 20 selected works to be displayed at “circa” in Cairns. To check out all the works follow the link below.
